| Found it! |
[Mar. 24th, 2008|09:41 pm] |
So people are musing about buying a new car. Just to get into the spirit of the thing, I figured I'd post the fact that I've found mine:
That car's ignition is the sweetest sound I have ever heard. In fact, generally speaking, this is about as ideal as a car gets, I figure. Heck, it's even got two seats!
(...that or hopefully, they'll have TVRs here soon.) |

| On Beautiful Sundays |
[Mar. 16th, 2008|11:15 am] |
Bleedin' heck, today is gorgeous. I'm going to celebrate by taking a ridiculously long drive. I've already used up a tank of gas this weekend (over 300mi of driving in the past two days!) but with days this gorgeous, who can complain?
I should note one particular detail:
In his article, 400 Miles in a 1981 Corvette, Liberman discusses driving a Corvette to a location from where it would be shipped to Europe:
Suddenly, just north of Santa Barbara the right headlamp popped up. As fate would have it, I had left the lights on. You could almost hear the opening bars from Flight of the Valkyrie. "Come on, come on you little shit," I started screaming at the left lamp. "Pop!" Fifteen long, gut-twisting seconds later it did. Sure, I could have got more illumination sitting on the hood and holding a Zippo, but the lights were up! I was going to make it.
...
Now that I was back to cruising, I had some neurons to spare to contemplate the C3. What a brilliant little car. How did it know to pop those lights then and there? And maybe those neurons were cooked a little, but I realized what was going on. The Corvette knew.
This was it: the poor thing's swan song. It's death rattle. The last chance the tri-decade dog would have to be flogged California style. Sure, they have roads in Euroland. But 'Vettes — especially C3s – were built for the Golden State. Somehow, like a race horse about to be put out to stud, the Corvette knew. This was its victory lap.
[italics added]
I can't get over how beautiful, and how spectacularly underrated, our interstate system is. I have driven over 200 miles of interstate in the last two days. I spent most of Friday and Saturday on them.
Next time you have the opportunity, do yourself a favor: at sundown, get on a west-facing interstate in a car you love. On the far end of the trip, at the darker end of the sunset, treat yourself to one of your favorite restaurants.
It's one heck of a treat.
Right, I'm off to the gym. I'm going to take the scenic route. |

| On the New Viper |
[Oct. 31st, 2007|09:54 am] |
So I was reading about the new Viper engine...
Taken from: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=122304
The biggest trick here is the 8.4-liter V10's variable cam-phasing device known as Cam-in-Cam. Variable valve timing is mechanically straightforward for DOHC applications, but an OHV engine with a single cam mounted within the block as found in the SRT-10 presents a challenge.
Here the hollow camshaft has fixed intake lobes on its outer circumference, while the exhaust lobes are attached to separate, movable inner shaft. A computer-controlled mechanism in the cam sprocket continuously adjusts the relative phasing between the two shafts. As a result, the valve overlap can be made radical enough for maximum power or conservative enough for a smooth and clean idle.
A surprising benefit is a 17 percent increase in fuel economy for this new V10. While the 2006 Viper was rated at 11 mpg city and 19 mpg highway (adjusted for 2008 equivalency), the 2008 Viper is good for 13 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Plus a buyer of a 2008 Viper pockets a $1,700 savings in gas-guzzler tax.
...wow. I want one. |

| AARRRGH... why are all the fun hobbies so freakin' expensive? |
[Oct. 26th, 2007|11:05 am] |
Alright, racing is way too expensive a hobby to be sensible.
Not that flying around at 120mph, powered by explosions, protected only by a flame-suit and a thin helmet is sensible to start with.
Rotors have heat-spots all over them. Puts me out $300 bucks. GAH! At least my exuberant spins didn't detach my sway-bar, as has happened in previous vehicles...
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Braking breaks brakes?!
Previous plan: 1. Get fancy intake 2. Get fancy exhaust 3. Get HUGE suspension upgrade (we're looking at $2000 here)
New plan: 1. Get better rotors 2. Get fancy intake 3. Get fancy exhaust 4. Get HUGE suspension upgrade (we're still looking at $2000 here)
This is generally in-line with my professed philosophy of, "before you improve your 0-60, improve your 60-0."
Right, back to real work now. |

| Arg. That Bears game... |
[Oct. 15th, 2007|08:36 am] |
Arg.
The Bears are an absurd team to watch. I can't imagine what it's like to actually be them. Watching is insane enough.
Also, moving sucks. However, thanks to the excellent help of Clint, Chris, Ky, Jay, and Andy, moving became significantly easier. We're now in a position where we hope to start living out of the new house by the end of this week. After that, it's all downhill...
...isn't it?
Also, sadly, we're going to have to close the pool -- it's getting way too cold. Maybe next year I'll invest in a pool heater and a salt pump, but this year, I'm afraid I'm going to close it down.
So, the aforementioned party will most likely be a movie night instead. Less cool, but I'm seriously all partied out...
Right, to work! |

That's pretty... um... I'm going to go with "neat."
Also, detail on the party are forthcoming. The plan has been slightly re-thought, given input -- I'm thinking a chill movie-and-pizza night on a coming Sunday, instead of a Saturday party. Further updates as events warrant |

| Addiction |
[Sep. 19th, 2007|11:30 pm] |
I was hoping to put off posting until after the house thing had settled down, so as not to distract myself from tackling more pressing issues. However...
( I just can't keep my mouth shut ) I have raced autocrosses. I have had my share of fun on lonely, winding mountain roads. I have spent thousands of hours behind a wheel. Never before, however, have I attacked a course so technically demanding, so precise, so beautifully engineered, in so perfect, so neat, so precise a machine.
Today, in the office, I was worthless. I could not concentrate. All I could think of was the tang in the air, the acrid smell of white tire-smoke, the rumble of engines, and the heady, wide-eyed fear that races through one at the apex of a sharp turn taken at lethal speed. All I could think of was concentrating on the line through a turn, of the eager boom of a downshift, of effortlessly floating into triple-digits on the straight.
This weekend may have been the first time I was on a technical, designed-to-terrify track. It won't be the last. This is the beginning, I suspect, of a long and very, very expensive passion.
A long time ago, I asked someone why anyone would buy a Lotus Elise over a Corvette.
Now I know. |

| Oh, For Crying Out Loud... |
[Sep. 17th, 2007|07:41 am] |
I've been holding off updates until this house-buying thing passes over. However, one thing really caught my eye:
Robert Jordan, author of Wheel of Time, is dead. And, the Wheel of Time is unfinished.
AUUUUUGH!
God DAMN! I started reading that series when I was knee-high to a short duck! I have every single book in hardback!
AUGH! This is not cool!
Stupid Mondays. |

...not that it matters. I'm so far behind on my iteration plan that this weekend's going to be a bit of a write-off. Damn long vacations on labor day, couped with house-buying and feature-creep at work! My routine is way, way off... |

| Right, back in Atlanta... |
[Sep. 4th, 2007|08:13 am] |
Right, we're back from the NY fair.
First off, upstate NY is straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. We had a great time with Sarah's upstate family.
The fair was... an experience. We were crammed into the fairgrounds with over 100,000 people, and I'm still sore from the 8 to 10 hour trek. There was a lot to see, but man, I'm paying for it now with a steady diet of Asprin. We may go again, next year or the year after. This time, I'll know what I'm getting into, and won't wear a button down shirt with nice shoes...
Also, 33-3. WHEE! This is the first year I have hope for our team since the departure of George O'Leary...
...wait, that's hilariously ironic!
Go Jackets! |

Whee! After many adventures, we've finally arrived. A few naps later, I feel a whole bunch better.
Right. Let's see what this State Fair thing is all about. |

Happy Monday, folks. Whee. |

[Aug. 19th, 2007|10:12 am] |
So I think I threw my back lifting... gddangit. It's been all happy pink flowers for about two months now, after the wallet incident, and I go and ruin it. Well, wouldn't be me otherwise :)
In other news, who's ready for this string of 100F+ days to end? I thought the rains on Friday would help, but they apparently didn't get that message... |

So this workout-late-at-night thing just wasn't working. New plan: get in to work at 6AM, work out in the gym downstairs.
It's worked really well so far. Let's hope I can stick with this. I'm just a not a very good late-night person. All mornings for me.
Sarah, on the other hand, hates the idea. Trust me to find an evening person, eh? |
